The holding of the G20 Summit meeting here in Rio de Janeiro is a symbol of the resumption of our vocation to host major events and to consolidate Rio as a showcase for Brazil to the world. We have a mission as a postcard of the country and we are honored to be this host for the visitor and for those who come to participate in such an important journey as the one proposed by the G20. We will certainly have meetings, debates and events here to be essencial to trace the growth of all the nations represented.

Rio de Janeiro: historic vocation to host major world events

Historically, Rio de Janeiro attracted the world´s attention as a showcase of Brazil and a stage for major events. Not only festive ones like Carnival and New Year´s Eve, but also those where world authorities meet to, together, set goals for a better and, above all, more sustainable planet. It was like this at Eco 92, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, the 1999 Summit, Rio+20 in 2012, the Pope´s Visit during World Youth Day in 2013, the FIFA Football World Cup in 2014 and the 2016 Olympic Games.

Brazil, especially the State of Rio, is experiencing a new moment, as the rest of the countries that make up the G20, the international economic cooperation forum created in 1999 that is made up of 19 countries, including developed and emerging nations, and by the European Union. And it is here in our state that the executive heads of these nations will meet this year, confirming that Rio is the national address for the most notable events taking place in the national territory.

We took on the management of RJ with the commitment to rescue and revitalize the image of our state, a success that is based on the constant search for dialogue, ensuring partnership and exchanges based on excellent cooperation between our management and the Federal Government, the Legislative Branch and the 92 city halls of Rio de Janeiro.

This dialogue, with cooperation between spheres of government, was approved and tested in the recent Copa Libertadores final and remains a principle that should also guide the meeting between heads of state, in November this year, and other various meetings, forums and meetings that are already being held in RJ, starting with the meeting of chancellors that took place in February.

The expectation of hosting the event of such importance increased with the arrival of December 1st, when Brazil assumes the presidency of the group and begins to manage the calendar of activities that will be carried out over the next few months in the national territory: the most important of them in the State of Rio de Janeiro, confirming its vocation as the venue for major meetings and decisions.

RJ is prepared to receive the most varied delegations and provide each visitor with unique experiences. We are working intensely so that our public policies are fully aligned with the sustainable objectives established by the United Nations (UN), we made the largest concession of public services in history, creating the necessary conditions to bring sanitation and drinking water to 100% of our territory.

In addition to stimulating entrepreneurship, the State of Rio de Janeiro surpassed the mark of 120 thousand jobs created in 2023. A large part of this economic recovery is due to the services sector, greatly leveraged by the resumption of Tourism, which last summer received more than R $15 million in investments.

RJ once again became the country´s main port during the cruise season, recorded hotel occupancy rates above 90% in the months of major festivities such as New Year´s Eve and Carnival, and is preparing for this new international reception of travelers who will be in the state for the G20 meeting.

The choice of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro as the venue for this fundamental international meeting could not happen at a more opportune time, as our national economy, the fifth with the highest growth rate among the countries that make up the group, stands out positively on the global stage. This is also why we have acted as spokesperson for the main demands of emerging nations in the context of economic, commercial, social and, mainly, environmental policies.

In this moment of intense joy and consolidation of the good rescue work in Rio de Janeiro, the state crowned host of most of the Group of 20 meetings, we want to repeat the greatest expression of welcome to all visitors: Come, we are waiting for you with open arms!
