One of the settings that most reflects Rio's bohemia, Lapa, in the Center of the Capital, boasts one of the most replicated monuments in photos and postcards representing the city of Rio de Janeiro: the Arcos da Lapa.
The structure, opened in 1750, in the 18th century, was intended to be an aqueduct, taking water from the Carioca River to the Largo da Carioca fountain. But, in 1896, the arches became the pillars for the passage of trams installed to transport passengers and to access the Santa Teresa neighborhood.
The structure draws attention for its design and architecture, with 42 arches arranged over 270 meters in length, reaching around 18 meters in height. Designed and built in the Roman style and in mortared stone, it is considered the largest architectural work undertaken in Brazil during the colonial period.
