Considered one of the largest open-air leisure and sports areas in the city, Aterro do Flamengo is also the stage for major events. There are more than 1 million square meters of area that have already welcomed millions of people to pray with Pope John Paul II, sing with King Roberto Carlos, the route of national and international marathons, and the headquarters of the Eco-92 Global Forum, with exhibitions and debates. The site was built thanks to the demolition of the Castelo and Santo Antônio hills, which provided material and modified the city's urban design, even creating the Santos Dumont Airport. From the landfill, which has a landscape design by Roberto Burle Marx, it is possible to see other tourist attractions, such as Cristo Redentor and Pão de Açúcar, which facilitated traffic from the South Zone to the Center and has Flamengo beach, which, in recent months, regained its bathability, making it possible to swim in the sea, on the shores of Guanabara Bay.
