The Historic Center of Paraty, one of the most visited destinations on the southeast coast, is made up of a charming setting, which looks like something out of a period soap opera. Therefore, it was no surprise that the region, which brings together more than twenty monuments of great historical interest, was listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) as a National Heritage Site and, since 2019, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which considers it “the most harmonious colonial architectural ensemble”.
Its streets, formed by irregular stones, are protected by large chains that prevent cars from passing, preserving all of its colonial history. The paving, known as pé-de-moleque, began to be made in the 18th century, thanks to the development brought about by the gold cycle. The Historic Center of Paraty is home to good restaurants and craft shops. Visitors can also go on trails and boat trips to the islands in the region.
Also takes part of the architectural complex of the municipality of Costa Verde, the Príncipe mansion, a building belonging to the royal family surrounded by imperial palm trees; the Fish market; the houses on Rua Pereira; the Pedreira fountain, the Mother Church and the Abacaxis townhouse, rich in architectural details with iron balconies shaped like pineapples.
