Escadaria Selarón

Escadaria Selarón

Measuring 125 meters long and with 250 steps, the Santa Teresa Convent Staircase, better known as the “Escadaria Selarón”, is the third most sought after attraction by tourists in the city of Rio de Janeiro, behind only Cristo Redentor and Pão-de-Açúcar. Located just five minutes from Arcos da Lapa, the setting is ideal for photographic recordings. The staircase was designed and built by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who dedicated around 20 years to the work. To color the mosaic, the painter and ceramist searched for more than two thousand tiles in different parts of Brazil and in around 120 countries. Selarón sold paintings to sponsor the work. The scene has already been the stage for music videos by several national and international artists, such as the American rapper Snoop Dogg, and the Irish band U2.
