Jardim Botânico

Jardim Botânico

Founded in 1808 by D. João, then prince regent of Portugal, the Botanical Garden is known for its plants’ exuberance. There, visitors can discover species from different countries, as well as greenhouses for orchids, bromeliads, ferns and thematic gardens and collections, such as the Japanese Garden, created in 1935, following the donation of 65 specimens of Japanese plants. The tour can be done on foot or by electric car. Among the monuments of the Botanical Garden, the highlights are the Visitor Center, which is a 16th century construction, the statues of Eco and Narcissus, by the sculptor Mestre Valentim, and the Portal of the Academy of Fine Arts, designed by the French architect Grandjean de Montigny. Since its creation, the Botanical Garden's proposal was to bring together plant species from different parts of the world. The site is considered one of the most important global research centers in the areas of botany and biodiversity conservation.
