Originally from a sugar mill, the history of Parque Lage began in 1811, during colonial Brazil and, over the years, it went through a series of transformations. In 1840, the place was redesigned and inspired by romantic English parks. Years later, the property was purchased by Antônio Martins Lage and became known as Parque dos Lage. In the 1920s, it was remodeled again by Henrique Lage, grandson of Antônio Martins, who wanted to please his wife, the Italian opera singer Gabriela Bezanzoni. During this period, the place was the scene of large parties attended by representatives of Rio's high society. In 1960, part of the land was purchased by businessman Roberto Marinho to build the TV Globo headquarters, but the property was expropriated and transformed into a public park. In the Park, which is in the middle of the native Atlantic Forest, there are imperial palm trees, lakes and artificial islands, as well as caves and aquariums embedded in the walls. The place is the ideal environment for picnics, but it also has a bistro, in the central courtyard of the mansion, which is by the pool. Art and music events take place there throughout the year. In 1957, Parque Lage was listed by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) as historical and cultural heritage of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
