LEME, COPACABANA AND IPANEMA BEACHES
Few cities have the privilege of having a coastline like the capital of Rio de Janeiro! All stand out for their beauty and location. And those who live in Rio are so intimate with them, that they even give them nicknames, such as Leme “Noronha”, Copacabana, Little Princess of the Sea, Arpex for Arpoador... All of them are always in great demand!
Their names have different origins. Copacabana, for example, is of Quechua origin, from a Bolivian tribe, and means “looking at the lake”. Leme comes from the rock formation at the end of the beach, which, from above, is shaped like a boat's rudder. Ipanema, despite the name meaning “bad water” in Tupi-Guarani, has one of the most beautiful seas and Arpoador, comes from the verb “arpoar”, which means to throw a harpoon to fish (which was made from stone in the local).
