Municipal Theater

Municipal Theater

One of the most imposing buildings in Rio de Janeiro and one of the main concert halls in Brazil and South America. The Municipal Theater has welcomed, over more than a century of history, great national and international artists of dance, music and opera. The building's construction project began to be thought of in the 19th century by actor and businessman João Caetano, but only took shape at the end of that period, after receiving the support of playwright Arthur Azevedo, who died months before the inauguration, in 1909. With current capacity for 2,252 spectators, the venue began hosting mainly opera and dance companies from Italy and France. From the 1930s onwards, however, the Municipal Theater formed its own artistic body - with the Symphony Orchestra, the Choir and the Ballet - which has been performing since then.
