Energy production from sea wind, solar energy and decarbonization of the economy are some of the State Government's bets to diversify the energy matrix in Brazil

Largest producer of biomethane in the country. Second largest producer of biogas. Responsible for 73% of natural gas production, considered the fuel for the energy transition. The state of Rio de Janeiro works to consolidate itself as a protagonist in the diversification of the energy matrix in Brazil.

The state, which has 636 km of coastline, took the lead and is developing a pilot project to test the feasibility of implementing offshore wind farms, to produce energy from wind on the high seas. More than 60 companies joined the plan led by the State Secretariat for Energy and Marine Economy, which includes the evaluation of variables such as the performance of turbines, the interface with marine fauna and flora and fishing communities, the measurement of winds and the power generation.

Rio also invests in the production of solar energy, and is among the ten states with the highest generation. The goal is to expand operations with the development of new projects, such as programs for the construction of affordable housing with solar energy.

As another measure to diversify the energy matrix, in 2024, the State Government will conclude the State Energy Transition Policy, which will define the guidelines for the decarbonization of the economy.

There are also three more projects underway: the implementation of energy efficiency programs in public buildings, the migration of group A energy bills (units that consume more energy) to the free energy market - which will allow the government to negotiate the purchase of energy from renewable sources at better costs - and the expansion of the Sustainable Corridors program, which encourages the replacement of diesel with natural gas in heavy vehicles, such as buses and trucks.
