The history of the Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo shantytown complex, in the South Zone, is the subject of an exhibition at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim, headquarters of Casa G20, in Ipanema. Organized by the Integrated City Program of the Rio State Government, the exhibition was inaugurated on Tuesday (04/16) and will be open to the public between April 17 and May 11. With the participation of community artists, the exhibition features oil paintings, graffiti, sculptures, videos of community residents telling their stories and interactive quiz totems.

According to the general coordinator of Cidade Integrada, Ruth Jurberg, the exhibition was organized showing the three major government interventions in Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo.  These are: Each Family A Lot, started in 1983; PAC Favelas, started in 2007, and Integrated City, which has operated on site since 2021, with urbanism and social work as the main pillars.

In the exhibition, the public will be able to check out a room with the timeline of the history of Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo, with images from each era, and the projects and improvement works carried out by governments over the decades.

As a highlight, the show also has a room bringing together drawings made by residents – from children to the elderly – with their dreams for their community. The drawings are part of the “Imaginary Workshop” project. In this action, the Integrated City team asks participants to make these drawings, to become inspirations for future urban projects on site.

- This event is an opportunity for all Rio-born people and Brazilians to get to know the history of Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo, through the eyes and participation of the residents, who tell their own story – Ruth points out.

Integrated City holds monthly meetings with community leaders of the shantytown complex, representatives of the government and residents. In addition, Integrated City also distributes a newspaper for free, which brings together interviews with residents, agenda of events, works and renovations carried out in the places.

 - Holding this exhibition is another way for Integrated City to show its respect for Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo. It is a pride that the program is part of the 2030 Agenda and the G20 – Ruth comments.
