On Wednesday morning (09.04), Casa G20, which operates at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim, in Ipanema, hosted the event Warm-up Summit of the Future, promoted by the United Nations Information Center for Brazil (UNIC Rio) and the German Consulate in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting brought together about 100 young people from NGOs and communities, aiming at discussing the role of youth in building the future.

The Summit of the Future will be held by the United Nations (UN) in New York, on September 22 and 23, and will bring together heads of state and civil society, aiming at accelerating efforts to meet international commitments, such as the Sustainable Development Goals.

Germany's Consul General in Rio, Ian Freigang, highlighted the importance of reforming the UN structure so that the institution can once again develop an effective global governance role. For him, it is essential to listen to the youth to contribute to the preparation of the Pact for the Future.

– The United Nations’ challenges are very large and complex, and they need significant reform to re-develop an effective global governance role. We want a concrete pact for the future, we shall be ambitious in our proposals, as we need a strong system, no country can solve the problem of the climate crisis alone – explained Freigang.

The head of UNIC Rio, Diego Lobo, stressed that youth have enormous potential to help solve contemporary issues.

– We understand the renewing force of youth, and we understand when we talk about the Future Summit, the focus needs to be on young people, on events for young people, among youth themselves. We have faced many challenges to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and the Summit is the opportunity we have to discuss commitments for new measures to respond to future problems, "said Diego Lobo.

During the event, a debate was held on the importance of youth for the future in three axes: education, inclusion through sports and climate change. The session was composed by student Ana Clara Reis, from Solar Menino de Luz; student Ranna Cortês, from the NGO Bola pra Frente and biologist Thaynara Fernandes, from the Young Climate Negotiators Program.

The young women emphasized the importance of the fight to ensure more opportunities for public school students, in addition to strengthening basic and primary education to combat inequality in education. The recognition of sport as a tool for female inclusion and empowerment was also a point raised during the discussion.

In addition to these themes, the young women highlighted to be essential to democratize the debate on climate change and society's access to the theme.

– I want to be able to talk about this topic with my neighbors in the community, and I want them to understand me. This is a difficult topic, and we need people to understand the impacts of climate change on our future. We can clearly see the existence of environmental racism, environmental tragedies most often affect areas mostly occupied by people in social vulnerability, "said Thaynara.

The meeting also had the participation of members of the artistic collective Slam das Minas.
